WHO ARE
WE? |
The KARATE CONNECTION was founded in
1980 in Hawthorne, California, as a school. Since
its inception, it has evolved into an Interactive,
Multi-media Program, International in scope. The
system taught is KENPO. Our students range in rank
from beginners to Black belts. The International
Karate Connection Association was chartered in 1990.
The I.K.C.A.
has, as its foundation, a set of
bylaws
detailing the rules under which an Independent
School, Club or Youth Outreach Program may be operated,
while being affiliated with an International
Organization, for the purpose of promoting, being
promoted and record keeping. You'll find in
reading the I.K.C.A bylaws that you may use the Karate
Connection Kenpo in any manner you wish. You may
use it as a complete system, as we do, or you may
integrate any portion of it with your own material, to
whatever degree fits your teaching philosophy.
Becoming an I.K.C.A Certified Instructor is
another matter, fully detailed in the bylaws.
As far as beginning students are
concerned, we realized back in 1989 when we were
drafting our plan, no video program could be successful
unless we were able to correct all mistakes before they
went too far and compounded themselves. So we
devised, what we believe to be, the first video testing
method in existence, regardless of subject. The video
training tapes themselves, are only half of the program.
The other half is the, one-on-one relationship we have
with our students, through interactive video.
Having this kind of connection is just another way
of "being there".
There are many Kenpo concepts and
principals which are too advanced or complex to expect
the average beginning student to grasp. We couldn't
possibly have known when, during the video portion of
the program, to present them. For that reason they
were intentionally held in reserve, for when we feel the
student is fully capable of comprehending them.
Sometimes it happens as early as Purple belt. If
the student is a black belt from another style or
system, we may begin giving them the material at purple
belt because they have proven, with only a single test,
that they can handle it. At other times a student
might have to wait until he or she is going on green
belt to get into those intricacies. However, be
assured that no one makes Black Belt without learning
them, fully understanding them and physically
demonstrating them.
